Description

Having completed the module, students will gain comprehensive insight into the conceptualisation of risk within social theory, will understand interdisciplinary methodologies for analysing societal risk, and will understand the threats and possibilities of technological development. Moreover, students will familiarise themselves with the disparities in risk distribution across diverse social groups and will be able to chracterise the problems of risk regulation and governance assuring sustainable development and addressing issues related to human security.

Describe various aspects of concept of risk

Describe the sociological, psychological, and cultural aspects of the concept of risk in social theory, applying various theories to analyse the impact of risk on contemporary societies.

Apply the conceptual framework of risk governance for the analysis of particular risk cases.

Analyse inadequacies in distribution of risks

Analyse the inadequacies in the distribution of environmental and technological risks (among countries of different developmental levels, among different social strata, etc.).

Discuss how mass and social media is constructing and influencing the knowledge and attitudes towards technological, environmental, social risks at local and global level.

Examine differences between perceptions of risk

Examine the differences between expert and public perceptions of risk, along with opportunities for public participation in decision-making regarding risky activities across various domains/fields, and get acquainted with local and international agreements to address problems posed by environmental, technological, and social threats.

The syllabus of the module

The module aims to provide knowledge about risk notion in social theory, interdisciplinary approaches in social analysis of risk, threats and possibilities of technological development; inadequacies of risk distribution in various social groups, to develop skills to analyse the problems of risk regulation and governance assuring sustainable development and solving human security problems.

The module consists of 6 ECTS: a total of 160 hours, of which 64 hours are for classwork and 96 hours for individual work.
