Our challenge

Bee populations worldwide are declining due to factors such as habitat loss, pesticide exposure, and disease. This decline is having negative impacts on food security and ecosystem health, as bees play a vital role in pollination. At the same time, beekeepers face challenges in maintaining the health and productivity of their hives. How can we develop sustainable approaches to support bee health and honey production, while also protecting pollinators and promoting biodiversity? Are you ready to make a difference in the world while exploring cutting-edge technology? Join the Bee Solution Challenge! You'll have the chance to work on a real-world problem by designing a system of sensors for beehives, using IoT and machine learning technologies. You'll learn new skills in communication technology and data analysis, and work alongside industry experts from Intelligent Hives. Not only will you gain valuable hands-on experience, but you'll also be helping the environment by improving bee health and promoting sustainable agriculture. Plus, you can collaborate with like-minded students. So, are you up for the challenge? Join us today! The challenge also provides an opportunity to develop learners’ transversal skills and enhance their performance during presentations but also during the process of applying for a job. Cooperation, cocreation, pitching, peer learning and peer assessment, providing constructive feedback will play a pivotal role in this challenge aspect.

Information

The challenge involves developing a solution for monitoring the health and activity of bees using IoT and machine learning technologies. The solution should be designed to promote sustainable agriculture by improving the pollination process and ensuring the health of bee populations.

The challenge will be broken down into various sub-challenges and these can include activities such as:

developing a network of IoT devices to monitor the activity of bees, such as hive temperature, humidity, and sound levels; developing machine learning algorithms to analyze the data collected from various sources and generate insights into bee behavior and health; developing a dashboard or mobile application that provides beekeepers with real-time insights into hive activity and health, such as the number of bees, the amount of honey produced, and the presence of pests or diseases; developing strategies to improve bee health and promote sustainable agriculture, such as providing information on optimal hive conditions, pollination patterns, and the use of pesticides; developing innovative solutions for protecting bee populations and promoting biodiversity, such as the use of green roofs and urban gardens.

The challenge will be organized in collaboration with beekeeping organizations, agricultural companies, and environmental organizations to provide participants with access to resources, expertise, and mentorship.

Learners will develop essential competences to become more confident, convincing, and empathetic communicators able to ask follow-up and probing questions. The challenge provides them with space to simulate various academic and professional situations, such as: interviews, surveys, presentations, pitches.
