Our challenge

Studying the opportunity to use a methanol thermal engine for producing electricity on Class 40 boat in offshore and oceanic yachting races. Addressing the question of benefits and limits of the solution. All the solutions must be available for each competitor a market study is expected. The study must take account of oceanic specificities: water, salt, impacts, etc. For racing questions, the weight is the main criteria to investigate.

Information

This nano challenge is part of a global challenge offered by the company SOCOMEC, leader of power conversion. Read more about SOCOMEC.

For yachting race, electricity is everywhere for navigation and cooking usages, and thermal oil engine are yet very common to produce this electricity with some complementary solutions (PV panels and hydroelectric generator, etc.).

A large review of production methods and storage applications is done at INSA Strasbourg this semester, to equip the SOCOMEC Class 40 boat next years.

This nano challenge addresses specifically the case of methanol thermal engine solution.

All the constraints of ocean sailing: salty water, impacts, weight, and dimensions must be studied. Class 40 rules must be respected.

Especially a market study proving the solution availability is expected as every runner must have access to commercial solution.
